Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program

The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program (BTSALP) places highly qualified arts specialists in over 400 elementary schools throughout Utah.  The program operates under the direction of the Utah State Board of Education through legislative funding.  The specialists teach and collaborate with classroom teachers to provide exceptional arts instruction that is integrated into the core curriculum. The WSU Arts Learning Collaborative currently supports 19 schools served by 13 BTSALP specialists and 62 schools served by 3 BTSALP instructional coaches, serving approximately ~10,709 students.

The Arts Learning Collaborative also provides professional development training for the specialists and school faculties in our BTSALP area. Professional development is also provided by the BTSALP statewide University network–University of Utah, Utah State University, Southern Utah University, Brigham Young University, Dixie State University, and Westminster College.

Programming:

Weber State University will provide Professional Development Opportunities supporting BTSALP schools’ implementation of the side-by-side teaching model, and highlighting innovative arts integration practitioners locally and nationally. Offered throughout the year, these workshops will provide classroom teachers with proven techniques and strategies for addressing academic standards and implementing arts integration in their own classrooms.

Weber State University will provide mentors for BTSALP arts specialists.  Mentors support the arts specialists through on-site visits in which they observe classrooms and offer feedback about lessons, attend planning meetings, and provide additional resources related to arts integration.

WSU arts education faculty and students work with BTSALP schools to support School Art Nights—fun evenings for students and their parents to participate in hands-on art making and raise awareness of the BTSALP program.
